Preface

It’s the final issue of this DC / PR crossover! Does it have a legendary end or could this whole team up be somehow worse than “Shellshocked”?

The Cover

I like how this cover mimics the shot of the Dinozords together like in the show, but after all of the other covers we’ve gotten for this crossover, this is a lame one to end the series with.

The Story

So, from the last issue, Alpha is battling the giant monster like no one’s business. On the ground, the Rangers realize that the Command Center isn’t in the bottled Angel Grove, it’s personally with Lord Zedd as he starts his own attack with the Brainiac-controlled zords. Billy and Cyborg jump back in the fight when Brainiac tries to take over Cyborg again. This time, Cyborg was loaded with a virus, which is used to take down all of Brainiac’s forces and Brainiac himself.

Lord Zedd grows giant to destroy Alpha and takes out Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern with his magic. Luckily, the Rangers now have control of their zords and form the Megazord.

Morphinonemal.

The Rangers take the shrunken Command Center from Zedd and beat him up until he shrinks back down, where he gets punched in the face via boxing glove arrow from Kim. Later, the Rangers use the Megazord to activate Brainiac’s ship and unshrink Angel Grove. Both parties celebrate at the Juice Bar and later, the Justice League says goodbye and promises to find new homes for Brainiac’s cities. But… *sighs* there’s more…

*unintelligible swearing*

Ending Thoughts

This ending was bad.

The final confrontation with the two villains was anticlimactic, everything between the fight and the final scene felt like forgettable filler, and the final scene itself was clearly setting itself for a sequel this crossover doesn’t deserve.

Before this issue, I would have recommended this crossover. The series overall did not do anything that exciting or amazing but the premise was decent. The art style was excellent, giving way to some beautiful visuals throughout the series. There were some fun moments and dialogue, like Zack asking Batman why he does not smile. And, as said in the last issue, I loved Alpha’s role and dialogue in the fifth issue. The crossover might have helped if he was the focus character for the series, making it a unique experience seeing a team-up from the perspective of an ally of the heroes.

However, great art and fun dialogue alone doesn’t excuse the choices made for this series. After the fourth issue, the story completely drops the Zack storyline. Although I criticized the Zack focus, having a conclusion or resolution for the storyline would’ve been better than none at all. It’s now more apparent that the Zack focus is basically a waste of time. Not to mention, that the Justice League stuff seemed to be non-existent. This crossover was more focused on the Power Rangers, but there was no attempt or effort to give focus on any of the DC characters and what they were feeling for this event. You could’ve written them out and the story would still feel the same. (The delay time between issues didn’t help either).

As a DC / Justice League fan, this series didn’t do anything for me. As a Power Rangers fan, I’m upset that there was so much potential here and it’s now wasted. This team-up is ultimately a forgettable experience that could’ve been so much more and I’ll recommend you should stick to the main comics instead.

Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid

  • It’s been awhile, in terms of comics, that we’ve had a franchise crossover like this and I doubt we’re going to be getting anything like this soon.
  • The Rangers really didn’t take the time to just look and see if the Command Center was in the shrunken city?
  • First time all series that the Megazord is formed and we have NO reaction from any of the Justice League? They knew about the Zords but didn’t know they could combine. So, Flash’s comments the whole series about how weird the Zords are in the end, pointless since there’s no payoff for these jokes.
  • Not to mention that none of the JL members acknowledge Zordon, aka THE GIANT FLOATING HEAD in the room.
  • The comic is making it look like the Megazord itself is its own entity since they’re not showing at all who’s talking and are barely showing the cockpit.
  • The thing about Zedd not fighting well as a giant could be a good explanation as to why monsters usually lose whenever they’re grown. But… we saw him use the growth grenades before back in issue #2 and he seemed fine. He didn’t fight at all, but he should still be used to the weight difference, shouldn’t he?
  • Seriously, what happened to Zedd? What happened? We don’t exactly have prison here so what’s going to happen? Why is that never answered? Or better yet, what about Brainiac’s body?
  • World’s greatest detective. Didn’t think about whether or not currency is the same between two different universes.
  • Also, I’m not entirely sure that Luthor was president for this continuity. Reboots and all of that.
  • Also, party at the Juice Bar is fine and all of that. But, you’re clearly leaving out Cyborg, dude! That’s just rude.
  • Even Bulk and Skull’s cameo couldn’t save this series.
  • I just realized I can’t remember a single noteworthy thing Tommy has done for this series. That’s not a good thing.
