Preface

Alright, in this corner, we got a robotic giant made from smaller robotic dinosaurs (and one sabertooth tiger and mastodon because why not?). And in the other corner, we got a gigantic space chicken with meat-hook hands! Backing him up is a cluster of eyeballs and a football-playing rhino!

Let’s Get Ready to Rumble!

The Cover

Pretty freaking great. Just a classic collage of monsters and destruction facing both the Megazord and Godzilla.

The Story

The Megazord is losing hard against the trio of monsters.

As Rita is trying to bring Tommy under her control again, Rita exposits her plan. Once she helps the Xiliens take over this world and the Power Rangers are destroyed, she’ll stab the Xiliens in the back, hoping to eventually find a spell to control the kaiju. Then, she’ll return to her Earth with her army of monsters and take over the world.

As it looks like it is the end of the Power Rangers, Godzilla rises up and starts attacking the kaiju. However, it still sees the Megazord as a threat and causes more damage to the Megazord. And, since Godzilla is still weakened from the fight from last issue, it’s not doing so well. Billy gets an idea to use the energy from the Power Sword to heal Godzilla back to full strength. Godzilla then recognizes that the Megazord is an ally, and they work together to defeat the monster trio.

Rita orders the Xiliens to bring her more kaiju. The Xiliens argue that it’s more dangerous to do that, but Rita doesn’t care and wants the chaos that will come from it. And, adding to their forces, Scorpina goes into her giant form as well. As Godzilla stares at the Megazord and wonders what to do next, Scorpina arrives on Earth along with the kaiju Kumonga, Kamacuras, and Megaguirus!

Ending Thoughts

We’re at the halfway point for the series and this crossover is still going strong.

Story-wise, this issue doesn’t add much. The only story bits it establishes are what Rita’s end goals are and Godzilla’s “partnership” with the Power Rangers. Mainly, this issue is essentially one long action sequence.

The battle here is so different from previous Megazord fights in the main MMPR series. The typical structure for a Megazord fight is one-on-one with another monster. Here, it’s a 3 on 1 fight where the Rangers are constantly thrashed on and have no choice but to rely on Godzilla to help turn the tables. Obviously, we can’t get any dialogue from Godzilla, but we are still able to get some emotion from the beast through its actions like the panel of just its face staring at the Megazord wondering what’s next.

Even though I stated there’s not much story progression here, Rita still shines as an excellent antagonist in the story. Acting a little more insane than in the regular Boom! Series, her end goal of essentially “I’ll figure this kaiju thing out” is fun. She’s trying everything to make everything as chaotic as possible which elevates the fight scenes and makes the story much more memorable.

Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #3 brings our two giants together as they fight through rounds and rounds of monsters.

Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid

  • So, just to recap, the fight with the Megazord vs. Godzilla resulted in a tie and the fight with the Dragonzord vs. Godzilla And, yes. I did have to look all of those Kaiju names because seriously, who would remember them all?
