Well… this isn’t the worst homecoming I’ve ever seen. That’s a statement for you…
The Cover
Using the spotlight to highlight the Rangers. Simplistic but effective.
(Yeah, I really don’t have anything that much to say about this. It looks nice, but I felt like I’ve seen it somewhere, so…)
But, I will say, all of their outfits look super fancy.
The Story
In Flashback Land, on the planet of the “Pongies” (I can’t make that up), Rita’s army goes to attack their army, but they have already been turned into stone because of a mishandled potion from one of their local potion makers, Baboo. Begging for Rita to end his life, Rita instead lets him join her army.
In the present, Billy tells the others about his possible internship at Promethea and his proposal for Matthew to replace him as the Blue Ranger. Although Jason says that Zordon chose Billy for a reason, Billy promises he’ll stay on the team if they don’t want him to leave, but that they at least should think about it.
But, they got more important stuff to worry about. It’s homecomin’ time and everyone’s got a date! Zack’s taking out Violet, his secret admirer. Billy and Trini are going together so they aren’t alone for homecoming. Kim, heck, even Bulk and Skull, all have their dates lined up.
And Jason’s not here because he’s got a date with a bathroom mirror…
Eventually, we get to the inevitable drama every homecoming dance has. Bulk insults the school on stage and intentionally gets disqualified from homecoming crown because Marleau Eskin, AKA one of the rejects from “Mean Girls”, threatened Bulk that his date will get a face full of paint if he accepted it. As if that wasn’t enough for one night, the Super-Putty AKA “Matthew” is about to tell Kim the truth who it really is when the real Matthew escapes from Rita’s captivity and bursts into the dance.
The Super-Putty tries to escape but is cornered by Jason. It still tries to reason with Jason, but he, along with the others, morph into action…
Ending Thoughts
This issue has a lot of fun surprises, great art, and even though this superhero comic doesn’t have any action in it, it tells a great story, showing off the characters and the world it’s set in.
It really is something of note that we have such a large cast of characters and every issue of this series does manage to balance them all and give each of them focus. We’ve not only gotten at least one character moment from every one of the Rangers, but also Baboo’s backstory, Matthew’s cool escape, the Super-Putty’s possible redemption, Violet’s introduction, and Bulk and Skull’s sideplot. It’s something that differentiates it from the main MMPR series. The MMPR series’ storylines usually have character moments from everyone, but there are single issues where it just focuses on the overarching storyline and the action in general. Here, it nails down the team aspect of the Power Rangers perfectly.
Go Go Power Rangers #7 is definitely “a night to remember”.
Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid
- Before you ask, no. I have no idea how Matthew got out of this. He said he used a fork to escape his chains and even if it was strong enough to lockpick them or something, the fork was shown to be on the floor, which meant he would have to kick it into his own hands and no offense, but I don’t think he can be that coordinated.
- Rita’s outfit in Flashback Land looks weird, but it’s better than what she’s wearing right now.
- Baboo’s backstory was interesting but didn’t have as much impact as Squatt’s backstory.
- Violet’s a cool character and I can’t wait to see her more in the future. Though, I am wondering how did Zack get her cell phone number?
- I think I know what’s going to happen with Bulk next issue and if I’m right, it’s definitely going to be heartwrenching.
