Super Megaforce Episode 17 “Vrak is Back, Part 2″ Review

“This is the most fun I’ve had all season!” – Lothor
Yes! Lothor’s words haven’t been more true than during Super Megaforce than with the Vrak is Back two parter! I think I enjoyed this two parter so much because it truly is the best of the Sentai that Megaforce is based on but it also brought back Vrak for his final row with the Rangers. While achieving visuals as well as story this episode will go down as a rarity during Super Megaforce where most of the strange ideas introduced are actually explained. We get an explanation and conclusion for Vrak’s Drills, Why Orion isn’t included in most of the episode and a small end to RoboKnight. However, there were also many instances where the story left much unanswered but such is Super Megaforce.

Troy VS RoboKnight (Morphed): During the morphed fights with Troy and the others in Ultra Mode the fight scenes are beautiful. Vrak really does his job in rubbing in the fact that RoboKnight is now evil and unfeeling. I absolutely love the run into a morph sequence and Ultra Mode and was happily surprised that the feather effect was kept from Goseiger. But at this point it was actually strange to me that I enjoyed the dialogue between Troy and RoboKnight with Vrak’s sass spliced in.

Defeating Drill Horn: I love every battle that involves the Gosei Ultimate Megazord! I found this Megazord battle to be a little more interesting than the fight with Tresnaug when he transformed into a giant spire and flew at the Megazord. While Tresnaug performed something similar, this was a little cooler! Again, this monster’s destruction helped along Vrak’s plan and as I’ve said several times in this reviews, I love Vrak’s plan in these episodes.

Master Head, is that you?:Did you notice that a strange face appeared in the Ultimate Strike? This is the face of Master Head from Goseiger which was a very important character in the Sentai. Suddenly this image appears out of no where. I have had many discussions with people how we could explain this away and the easiest to explain is that it is simply Gosei’s face. Personally, I would’ve preferred Gosei’s face as a stone representation like the one above instead of the giant morpher, but it’s too late for that now.

Troy VS RoboKnight (Unmorphed): I have to say that the choreography and fury of the moment in this scene as it went on in the episode was fantastic. The fight has to be one of the best we’ve seen, unmorphed, in many years. In the future when people ask us what some of the best moments of Super Megaforce were, this moment will go down as part of the best.

HE HAS THE POWER!: I have two points to make about this moment. First, I will admit that the effects and sheer energy of the moment actually made this scene watchable. Andrew Gray gave all of his acting ability during these last few scenes and for me it paid off. Second, I am so confused by this scene. When the hell did Troy get this kind of power? Where did it come from? Can somebody tell me? Because, SPOILER ALERT: this is never explained. He just simply has this power to knock RoboKnight out and restore his goodness. It was cool but it didn’t make much sense in this scene while in Goseiger it totally made sense. Cool effect though.

Saving Orion: RoboKnight leaves the Rangers and heads down to Vrak’s underwater base to rescue the Silver Ranger. This sequence was a flawless mix of Sentai and Original footage! It was fantastic to see RoboKnight carry Orion out and the attacks he had with Vrak before the base’s destruction!

RoboKnight’s Key: This scene was another part that tied the episode together for me. While we are to believe that RoboKnight is the hero here, this scene played on the emotion of losing the character. It was rather interesting to see the end of a character portrayed as a light going out and it made it even more appropriate that this was made clear with RoboKnight’s Ranger Key. Which appeared out of no where, again.

Also, why is he placed between these two keys?

The Eclipse: As the Rangers head out to face Vrak once and for all, Vrak places all of the crystals in place and allows the moon to pass in front of the sun! Scenes in the dark have been kinda rare in Power Rangers and this scene is even more powerful under the eclipse! These fight scenes are again, the best that the Sentai could offer and look fabulous in Power Rangers. The intensity between Vrak and Troy is perfect.

Vrak’s Angelic Form: Let’s talk about this form for a moment. I remember a while back when we were all wary about Megaforce using Vrak’s Angelic form or the wings he was given in his final form. I am so happy that they did because they really did Vrak’s justice and it was a great end to one of my favorite Villains. I loved the feather and light attacks he used with his wings!

Troy’s Strike: When it comes to the end of Vrak nothing was more fantastic than Troy’s finisher that sliced through Vrak’s body and ended him. Again, wow what an ending to this character.

Vrak’s Body: I’m sure a lot of us were surprised by the plethora of dead villain bodies in Super Megaforce, but I rather think that showing the defeated remains of Vekar and Vrak are again true to the villains and made me happy to see. Not because they were dead, but it was a decent end to the both of them.

Finding Orion: Had you been waiting for that running in the water scene? I knew I was! But it was even more endearing for the Rangers to find Orion washed up in the water.  When the Rangers take him back to the command center I found it interesting that Orion explained that RoboKnight had transferred his life force over to Orion in order to save him. What is he the Magna Defender?! 😛

Final Thoughts

You’re probably sick of hearing me say this but Vrak is Back, in both of its parts, are really the best parts of Super Megaforce. I think one reason is that during these episode we felt a threat from Vrak, the story was well written and the Sentai reflected that. During Super Megaforce it is possibile that I have been watching it realizing what it is missing. For the first time I simply enjoyed it. While the Gokaiger footage is being wasted at least we got this gem to hold on to and I promise to do that. Especially when I review the final episodes of Super Megaforce and this season comes to a close.
