Hitting the major retailer shelves 
this month is the latest Power Ranger morpher labeled “Silver Morpher”. This is a $14.95 toy morpher and is used by the silver ranger (Orion) in Super Megaforce and leverages the use of a ranger key to activate his transformation. This product comes with a silver ranger key and the silver ranger morpher which you can see in the paragraph below.
If you have seen the other toys in the Super Megaforce line you will recognize the same sort of packaging and you can quickly identify what you’re getting for your $14.95. Note: The key in the actual morpher is just a cardboard cut-out to show you where to put the key. The actual silver ranger key is in the top-left of the packaging.
The Key and Morpher
The silver ranger key included is just 
like all of the other keys created for the Super Megaforce toy-line. It has 2 modes – Ranger Mode as seen in the picture to the right and Key Modes which is achieved by flipping up the legs. The paint/detail is pretty good, similar to the others as well.
The morpher itself fits really well in the hand and has 2 main parts. The top which houses a Ranger Key and the bottom 
keypad which generates sounds. The top portion of the morpher flips open and you can place any of the Super Megaforce Ranger keys and close the lid. The back has no features/functionality except a small door that is screwed shut where you can replace the battery.
The only other thing to mention is that the bottom has a key slot which is purely for aesthetics and does not produce any additional sounds. You can insert keys, however, if you choose to. A picture of the top is included as well for your viewing pleasure, but has nothing to note.
The Sounds
The lower part of the face is what you will interact with the most to 
generate sounds. Contrary to the Japanese version, where each ranger head is a button, the American version only has one giant button. Pressing any of the heads will yield the same result. Below are the sound effects you can get this morpher to produce.
Placing a key in the Morpher – it says “I’m going Legendary!”.
Removing the Key – The Morpher makes a generic “power-down” sound.
Without a Key – Any button pressed will either generate a generic “Beep” or a voice which says “Super Megaforce Silver!”
With a key inserted – The morpher will alternate between “It’s Morphin’ Time” and “Legendary Ranger Mode!”.
Unfortunately that’s all you get for sounds from this morpher and it may disappoint some that the volume of this morpher is pretty quiet.
A Brief US / Japanese Comparison
To the right is a comparison of the Japanese Gokaiger Morpher next to the American Super Megaforce Morpher. As you can see there are aesthetic differences in addition to feature differences. I will not go in depth as this is a review about the American version of this morpher but some key features that are missing in the American version are:
- Individual Button Sounds
- A Key-Scanning Mechanic
- Sounds when a key/anchor is inserted into the bottom.
The Verdict
You can summarize the American Super Megaforce Silver Morpher with the following phrase: “You get what you pay for”. I’m not saying that the morpher is bad – In fact, you do get a fairly fun roleplaying morpher for the cost of a couple cups of Starbucks. Children will likely enjoy putting their keys in the morpher and it does look good sitting on a collector’s shelf. At such a low price, it’s hard to fault Bandai for the differences between the Japanese and American versions. As always though, “value” is in the eye of the beholder and the decision is ultimately yours whether this is worthy of your collection.
