Preface
Ok, if for some weird reason you’re only reading Mighty Morphin and not the Power Rangers series, then you might be a little confused as to what happened after the ending of Mighty Morphin #14.
To put it simply…
Sentry Force Four got their blue butts kicked by the Rangers.
Empyreals showed up and everyone went to use their Zords.
Zordon went to the moon to get the Zeo Crystal to stop all of this but was attacked by Lord Ed.
The Cover
Both covers essentially have the same concept: hero vs villain. I don’t know whether or not this was intentional or not, but if it is, I would give it major props.
As cool as it is to finally see the Omega Megazord (or whatever it’s called), it’s not as groundbreaking as I thought it would be. And the image of Zordon vs. Zedd just has more impact.
The Story
In Flashback Land, Zordon meets Zedd for the first time.
Next.
On the moon, Lord Zedd and Zordon duke it out with Zedd confronting Zordon about his “betrayal” all those years ago.
Back on Earth, the rest of the Rangers on the ground get in their Zords and join the fight against the Empyreals. The Sentry Force Four are wondering if they should do something about their leader going all destruction crazy when they’re interrupted by Zelya and Goldar’s crew all-out attack against them. While watching the fight, Zartus gets distracted just enough for Grace to come in and destroy with her Psycho Dagger the crystal that controlled the Empyreals.
Sensing the crystal’s destruction, the Empyreals decide that after destroying Earth, they will do the same thing to every single planet in the universe. Zartus, realizing that they’re completely screwed, teleports off of Earth. Meanwhile, Tommy and Matt finally realize that if they’re going to win, they need to give the people what they want. A brand new combination.
Back on the moon, Zordon attempts to convince Zedd that he’s been manipulated by Zartus, but Zedd isn’t convinced. As they’re distracted, Zartus sneaks into the ruins of the Moon Palace for his backup plan… the Zeo Crystal!
Ending Thoughts
Great action-packed issue.
The Zordon vs. Zedd fight, while I’m unsure how to feel about the core of the fight essentially being one misunderstanding, is an epic fight with great motion, colorful attacks, and impressive utilization of the environments. In fact, that’s the case with all of the fight scenes. I especially love how we get a wide range of environments to use. From the city to the ocean to even outer space. It’s great that we can see just how big this fight against the Empyreals truly is.
Mighty Morphin #15 is worth the hype, acting as the penultimate issue for the final fight against the Empyreals and in the Eltarian War.
Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid
- So, briefly mentioned above, but yeah. The flashback scene is the weakest portion of the whole issue just because it can be summed up in one sentence. If there was a flashier way of “introducing” Zedd to Zordon, I think it could’ve been more memorable.
- So, what’s not getting me completely on board with the Zedd vs. Zordon dynamic is that I thought Zedd would be smarter than how he’s acting in this issue. Especially after seeing all of the manipulation tactics Zartus has shown in the present. But then again, we do know how Zedd is in the later seasons of the show. So, I don’t know… I just expected this to not be resolved by Zordon laying out all of the facts and basically saying he’s an idiot. Personal opinion, though.
- So, I’ve seen comments about how this is Grace’s first time fighting with the Psycho Dagger and I’m like… is it? I mean, if it is, ok, that’s cool I guess. The Psycho Dagger has just been a MacGuffin item for so long and in used in so many ways that I don’t care too much about it now.
- Also, White Tiger Dragonzord. It’s the combination a lot of fans have been imagining for a while and it looks great. Don’t have a lot to say about it. Incorporates both designs effectively into one unit with both signature weapons.
