“The Adventures of Redbot” was just an okay episode for me. As I was tweeting about earlier this week, this episode basically serves no purpose except for filler. I will say however, it did give us focus on an adorable side character, Redbot, which I did welcome. I do love Redbot and having some focus on him was a little interesting. Although, many moments left me scratching my head pertaining to just how smart this robot actually is. Let’s take a look back at some of these moments!
Redbot’s Fake News: Throughout the episode, Redbot worked on his adorable little blog which focused on the Ninja Steel Rangers fumbling through their real adventures but with slight little fibs throughout. Redbot fiddled with the truth in order to add himself into the story and make himself the hero. This caused his blog to explode and gained himself a lot of followers simply because he sensationalized his stories by telling lies. Sound familiar?
Eventually, a publisher wanted to make a book out of his blog, but later in the episode, he gets caught up in his embellishments and learns that even the tiniest lies can have dire consequences. His Ranger friend, Levi attempts to warn him about telling lies in order to gain fame in the beginning of the episode but he chose to ignore him and was tempted by fame even more by the publisher. What was even worse was that he was tricked further by Victor and Monty’s shenanigans. So mainly, mostly it was Redbot’s naivety that caused this entire issue. Redbot still seemed good at heart throughout the episode.
The issue I am getting with Redbot here is I am imagining that he has the personality of a child, where he has to learn certain lessons as they would. He may be a robot but he is not as astute or as completely mentally formed as he should be for the life-form that he is. But, it was Redbot’s speech at the end that really got me. He admitted that the Power Rangers were the real heroes, not him, humbling himself even though he had saved Mary moments before. He really redeemed himself at the end and that was a valuable lesson for both the character and the small viewers at home.
Cat O’Clock: While I really didn’t enjoy his voice actor that much, he sounded a little too goofy and lazy to me, I did love the monster all together. Cat O’Clock had a hilarious way of speech in which he would say “Meow Meow” after every sentence he spoke and that either annoyed the hell out of you or made you laugh out loud. For me, I couldn’t stop laughing at that to the point where I was walking around normal life saying it.
For the most part, his plan was pretty decent, although it didn’t last long. His plan was to freeze the Ninja Steel Rangers, and some citizens of Summer Cove, with Redbot’s book and then steal the Ninja Power Stars. Though he did succeed in freezing the Rangers, Redbot was quick to unfreeze them. He also succeeded in freezing Mary in the middle of a train track but again that plan was quickly foiled as well. So, he did have a decent plan but the Rangers foiled it rather quickly. In retrospect, this monster was more comedic fodder than anything else.
Mary Is Not Having It: When Redbot finally gets to the tale of how she was saved during the Stonedozer attack and earthquake something seemed a little off to her. Instead of being saved by the Gold Ranger as she remembered it, um because she was there, Redbot tells the story as if he had saved her. What was the best part about these scenes is that Mary is in no way putting up with these lies and calls out not only Redbot on his embellishments but later Victor & Monty as well! Mary, making her second appearance on the show, is becoming a favorite of mine and can be added to one of the better child actors in the Neo Saban Era.
Best line ever? “CAN IT VICTOR!”
Redbot is a True Hero: After realizing the error of his ways and joining forces with Levi, Redbot finds that Mary had been frozen reading her book in the middle of a train track. Because everyone takes out their book to read in the middle of the train tracks, right? With the help of his jets on his boots, he saves Mary just in the nick of time from a speeding train! Mary thanks him with a big hug and as it turns out Redbot had the heart of a hero all along!
What made this moment even more heartfelt was that towards the end of the episode, Mary stood up for Redbot against the rest of the angry crowd at the High School to prove that he was indeed her rescuer. He had proven himself even after all of his lies in the blog.
Cosmo’s Blog: An awesome little nugget towards the end of the episode showed Cosmo getting on the blog bandwagon (as he was super into Redbot’s earlier). He writes about how he was the Champion aboard the Warrior Dome and walking amongst the ship being annoyed by things that are happening aboard. But, what is most interesting is that if you look closely you can see that he mentions that he’s wearing “Eltarian Silk” which if you remember your Power Rangers history enough is from “Eltar” the same planet that Zordon is from! Nice universe tie-in!
Victor & Monty: As usual, these two are up for screwing up the characters and making trouble. This week as Redbot was about to sign on the book contract, Victor and Monty just had to step in to make sure that Redbot got more money just so that they could milk fame off of him. Monty even prepared a giant contract off of the original (which I will admit was in Redbot’s better interest), which I was glad the publisher promptly shot down. They even hilariously called him Redburgh.
Later in the episode, Victor even attempted to push himself into Redbot’s stories and even hijack them for his own. Luckily, Mary wasn’t having any of their shenanigans and called them out for placing their own “heroic” storyline into real-life events. I want Mary in every episode, please.
Later in the episode, as everyone at the book reading had been frozen, Mick decided that he wanted to leave these two frozen for a little while. The two were decorated with hats and coats as with they were racks and everyone had a good laugh. That was probably the most satisfying ending to a Victor and Monty scheme so far this season. Very satisfying indeed!
This episode had some cute moments with Redbot learning his lessons about fibs, some sassy moments from Mary and some awesome comeuppance for Victor and Monty but the episode was still a little mediocre for me. It’s not much to write home about, it would be an episode you would most likely not revisit again unless you want to laugh at Cat O’clock saying “Meow Meow” at everything. However, we are nearing the last three episodes before the end of the series (and the Christmas Episode of course) and I cannot wait to see how this ends up! Until next week and Happy Halloween everyone!
