What can I say about this episode? It was neither anything amazingly grand to spew about nor is there much to hark over. However, this is another of those episodes with the great action with a sprinkle of the Rangers out of suit attempting to show friendship. I absolutely loved the scenes that featured Jake! He gets to know his green powers better, he was Mr. Brainfreeze, “Car Zord!” The beautiful scenes with Troy near the ocean and the Rangers aboard the Skyship were shot amazingly! One thing that should be taken away about this episode is that is just filmed and directed beautifully. The locales are just fantastic, another word to use for this episode may be a little “confusing”The New Opening Intro, Since we’ve started the intros when Samurai began I’ve tended not to like them because they don’t really serve a purpose besides reminding everyone why we are watching. However, this new intro we are being introduced to in Super Megaforce is vastly better than Samurai and Megaforce’s. It sets up an impending doom that neither the Warstar nor Nighlok’s exuded in either the openings or their respective series. Kudos to the team on this opening, I just must nitpick one little thing. Why does MMPR Yellow have a skirt and then Wild Force Yellow does not? CONSISTENCY FOLKS!
Noah & The Legendary Database, at first the idea that Gosei just granted Noah a database on all of the Power Rangers felt like they were just finding a way to rush the Zords and Powers. (I wasn’t wrong) But, the idea grew on me after I watched the episode over and over. I suppose this is a good way to eliminate cameos to make the powers make a little bit more sense. Instead, Noah is able to view the powers or Zords of a team per episode and how the plot sees fit. Yay…..
I’m intrigued if they are still going to make Orion a fanboy, will he have a better version of this database with 6th Ranger info?
The “Dairanger” Suits, at first I was a little confused as to the point of having these suits in the show. I do think that it is awesome to finally get the Dairanger suits used in Power Rangers, but at what cost? Again, I understand and love the whimsy that is Power Rangers where we can just say something happened and be done with it. However, I want these new power explained, even if only slightly. However, Gosei just gave us the brush off. “New Powers, Mahhh.” I feel like at this point that adding these in we are giving something else up.
While cool to look at, I don’t think that the Dairanger suits proved their purpose. Having seen Dairanger, the strange way the suits moves makes sense to me, but do they make sense to anyone who hasn’t seen Sentai? It may look just a little silly. They have no backstory, no weapons, no Team Name and no connection to the previous 20 Years of Power Rangers (that the Megaforce Rangers know of). So what was the point here? They might as well have put four doofuses in Morph Suits and made them a team. Oh, bring back Zedd’s Evil Rangers!
The RPM Change, I loooved this change and one of the reasons why is because of the skirt gender-bend. As you can see in this image above, Emma has morphed into Dillon, the Black RPM Ranger and because of this has gained a skirt. Why you ask? Well because Emma has a skirt and therefore when she morphs into another team, her skirt is added. Well, except for SPD which have no skirts.
But, the best part of this change was the fact that the Rangers actually said, “RPM Get in Gear!” AND accurately stated the names of the RPM Rangers’ weapons! How cool was that!?
The continuous use of the Megaforce suits, the thing that I am most unhappy about so far this season is how much attention the former Megaforce suits are getting. This episode I felt like the entire time I was waiting for the Megaforce suits to go away so we can get to the cool Super Megaforce suits. Troy spent most of his time in his Megaforce suit and never once morphed into a Legendary Ranger, besides the SPD Change at the end. I hope this trend is on its way out as the season progresses. It is eventually going to seem like overkill to morph into Megaforce and then Super Megaforce. It reminds me of how tedious it was during Season 3 when the Rangers had to go Ninjetti and then into Ranger mode.
The Unmorphed Fights, were completely excellent in this episode. Even though I was a little annoyed by what I wrote above I have to say that the original footage used for Troy’ s scenes and his battles were very well put together. Not to mention the fight with Emma, Jake, Gia and Noah before they morphed was another awesome fight sequence which helped me forget about the Megaforce suits.
The Deletion of Cameos, this episode in Gokaiger was the Dekaranger tribute, which featured not only Doggie Cruger but Jasmine and Ban as well. However scenes from Super Megaforce were cut down to delete all of these scenes. I know we all went into this only expecting 2 cameos within the show and then the great Legendary Battle, but I really wish Power Rangers had spent the money on “per episode cameos” just like Gokaiger had. If we had seen Jack and Z back for this episode I know that a lot more viewers would be on board! Not to mention Doggie Cruger should have at least made an appearance. Where is his suit?!
This episode seemed less and less like an SPD tribute and felt more along the lines of “Hey, here’s more Zords. Cool eh?”
SPD Tribute, in regards to Super Megaforce it was a DECENT tribute to SPD. It was in no way close to the way Gokaiger did it.
I am severely sad there is no SPD theme when the Rangers harness the SPD powers and use them to defeat Cybax. I am also sad that no SPD Rangers are making cameos, either here or in the Legend War. *sigh*
But, I guess you can’t have everything!
Monster of the Day; Cybax, was a little weak and seemed a lot like a General from Turbo and not from Super Megaforce.
However, he did seem a little menacing when he faced off against Troy, the SPD Powers & the Megazord!
BTW, what was with that missile time period? Who is he Divatox?
Legendary SPD Megazord, I’ve always loved this Megazord combination. It’s just so flashy and amazing!
Nothing compares to when the Megazord takes on the moves of Delta Squad Megazord and shoots from afar in mid dive!
The Delta Runner is able to fire shots while cruising and split apart once more and join the Megazord! So cool!
I am a little sad that you cannot hear the sirens blaring on the Megazord much like in Gokaiger, but all is well.
End Megazord Battle, that was random but looked really cool.
An interesting way to use wasted footage when you have a few moments to spare!
The Skyship Scene, I cannot get over how awesome this scene was and looked! It is by far my favorite! I was hoping for scenes like this to occur in Power Rangers Super Megaforce and I am so happy they did! The editing was fantastic and to hear the Rangers converse while hanging out on the Skyship gave me hope that more can go right with this series than can go wrong. At least, I hope so.
Final Thoughts
There were amazing parts to this episode, parts that made you go “whaaa” and several parts that gave us that familiar Power Rangers cringe!
The changes, except the fact that Troy barely got any, were on par. But I Want More!!!!!
I will have to agree with others that the Rangers talk a little bit too much for my taste during some of the fights scenes, but then that is backed up with amazing original footage.
As I said, I am still a little confused about the Dairanger suits, but I hope that the writers have done this for some sort of reason and ALL WILL BE REVEALED IN TIME! But, wouldn’t that be strange if they served a larger purpose??!! Mwahahahah!
I cannot wait to see what this series has to offer and all of the Ranger Changes in our future!
(That’s my favorite part of the series)
