Preface

It’s Parents’ Weekend!

Time for a bunch of awkward conversations with people’s families and avoiding your teachers so that they don’t tell your parents what horrible things they’ve been thinking about you.

Ranger Academy #6 (Main Cover)

On top, we got everyone in cool prom clothes while at the bottom Sage and Tula are off sneaking off downstairs in the Green Campus. Despite the part that I feel like these clothes aren’t what you wear for family night, this gives off the most Harry Potter vibes of teenagers having fun adventures.

The Story

Following up on how the last issue ended, Tula tells Sage that they’re going to go sneak into the Green Campus during Parents’ Weekend while everyone is distracted. Sage is worried about sneaking around and wants to ask Tula’s fathers for help. However, she flat-out refuses, demanding that Sage doesn’t tell anyone about the Green Campus.

During the party, Sage learns that there’s going to be a dance later on for the students, which instantly makes her want to receive food poisoning to avoid it all. Maeve offers a dress for Sage to wear, but she chooses a blazer from Kartyr instead, wanting to be a little more comfortable. And once that is resolved, Mathis introduces Sage to their mother and their younger brother. Mathis’s mother is Nadira from Time Force… And, that’s about it.

Accompanying a campus tour with some of the parents, Sage and her friends learn that the parents are concerned for their children’s safety because something’s coming. Accidentally interrupting the third years’ demonstration, Sage tries to get some information out of Tula. She ends up meeting one of Tula’s dads, Arlo, who tells his daughter that he’s not going to force her to come home with the added danger. Sage and Tula talk somewhere more private, where Tula reveals that Ranger Academy sent out an email about a potential threat to them: Dark Specter.

At the dance later, Tula pulls Sage aside and the two of them sneak off into the Green Campus, with Sage granting them the access they need. They go into the dorms, where Tula tearfully tells Sage the truth as she picks up a green necklace. Tula’s sister, Tashi, died… while she was a Green Ranger…

Ending Thoughts

This issue is the kind of story I live for. The fun, normal adventures of teenagers trying to be normal.

We all had to introduce our family to our friends growing up. You might be embarrassed, it could be overwhelming, but it’s something we can all relate to. We see them being regular teenagers with their family and for a few of them, we see a small picture as to why they’re the person that they are. For Tula and her family and why she was so hard on Sage. For Mathis being as kind as they are and yet willing to bend the rules given their ‘reformed’ mother and Ranger father. And, all of the dialogue feels genuine as the parents show their love for their children.

Ranger Academy #6 is a fun introduction to our cast’s families, showing them being proud of their children before setting up a student’s terrible past.

Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid

  • Regarding the Nadira cameo, it’s fine. Again, it hurts the overall mystery because we know that Green Rangers aren’t a bad thing per se. (She’s literally married to one!) But, still, I enjoy seeing this arc of Nadira throughout the Boom comics, just getting a chance to shine from her Hyperforce history to Sins of the Future to here where she has children and is more than happy where she is.
  • It goes without saying, but I actually do love everyone’s dance outfits.
  • I would have thought that the DJ for the dance was another Ranger cameo by the way it was interrupted, but it’s just another furry as I far as I can see.
  • If I was at this dance, I’d be in the corner, silently humming “Dancin’ With Myself.”
  • I still remember when the author of this series tried to compare it to My Hero Academia. All I’m thinking right now is “Tula, are you our Todoroki?”
  • Dark Specter, I swear to God, if you show up at this dance in some way, tying into Darkest Hour or whatever, you better pull out all of your dance moves, man!
