Preface
Now that the main series is having a team of non-MMPR Rangers, this is the only series that’s right now the only place to get pure Mighty Morphin’ content.
The Cover
Just a pretty cool design showing the Power Rangers and the villains in a technical, blueprint aspect. Doesn’t have much to do with the actual story, but I would wear this on a T-shirt.
The Story
Back to Flashback Land where Zack gets utterly destroyed in a dodgeball ball game by the new kid in school, Matthew.
In the present, after the Power Rangers defeat Pudgy Pig (Yes, that one), Rita tells her minions that she’s not surprised that they’ve failed her again and that they’re going to go to Earth soon.
It’s been three weeks since the Ranger Slayer spilled the beans to Matthew, and he still isn’t talking to any of the Rangers. However, Kim says that it’s probably for the best and that he’s safer now this way. Meanwhile, Trini’s mom has a special talk with her daughter about that ‘special’ boy she’s trying to impress and Billy’s dad shows off his totally rad bug and tells his son that he wants to them to fix it up together.
Soon, Zordon detects that Rita is personally attacking a recreation center in New York and sends the Rangers out to fight them. Rita, using a special key, creates a glowing portal to some other dimension and enters through it. Jason and Trini are also sucked through the portal too by a Mega Putty monster, just as the portal closes. They both wake up in this new dimension to find out they have somehow swapped powers and that they’re not alone…
Ending Thoughts
The main hook for this arc is obviously the color swap, which is fun and interesting, but there are a lot more details to look at in just this one issue. This issue goes back to the series’ formula, which balances all of the characters out. It contains references to actual episodes of “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers” like the Rad Bug and the Pudgy Pig fight (which I do have to say is the one thing most people remember of MMPR before the Green with Evil arc). It gave heartwarming scenes with Trini and her mom and Billy and his dad. It even seems to give time for Squatt to worry about his job security.
We have a new series artist for the book, Eleonora Carlini, and her work here is… a little different. She does a good job of using the series’ main designs for its characters as well as making some cool setpieces like the Power Blaster and the Morphing scene. The Rangers morphed themselves do look as amazing as Dan Mora’s art, despite it not being as detailed. The negative aspect of this art is that some of the scenes with human characters have them wearing some very odd expressions. Once it’s noticed, it’s hard to not notice. It just feels out of place from how the scene should flow and doesn’t feel as dynamic as it was previously. (Though, based on the artist’s previous works, we should see some cool and interesting scenery with this new dimension we’ll be spending in this arc so that is something to look forward to.)
Go Go Power Rangers #13 is a return to form for this series’ formula and it definitely is a fun jumping back-on point after the Shattered Grid arc.
Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid
- Just saying, but Zack and Matthew were savage during that dodgeball game. Throwing those balls on people’s shoulders tends to really hurt.
- Apparently, it’s been six weeks since Day of the Dumpster and “Food Fight” was the sixth episode of MMPR. Meaning that even in the comics, an episode had to happen every week and that is glorious.
- Trini’s mom talking about how Trini has so many yellow clothes is just so amazing.
- I actually do like the touch that Trini is wearing small bits of red on her, does foreshadow what happens in the end.
- Kim: “You know Rita, I can forgive you smashing the occasional abandoned building…” This is an amazing line for this show and don’t you deny it!
