Preface
Gotta admit, as I’m writing this, there are a lot of things breaking with the current PR products… Let’s hope this doesn’t break as well.
The Cover
Great imagery with the Green Ranger struggling against Rita’s control with an even greater threat behind them. Especially love the contrast between light and darkness with the white light being wisps of black shadows in it.
The Story
Ok, to Flashback Land! A few days ago, Trini and Zack were going through their normal routine, training the newest Omega Yellow Ranger, [Insert Name Here]. They start talking about missing Journey and Jason and Zack just casually drops the fact that he asked her out a long time ago. Then, Trini also drops the fact that she dated Jason. Before we get to those feelings, they get a distress signal which takes us back to the present.
While Kim, Rocky, Aisha, and Adam fight off Alpha-1, Tommy nurses his injuries at the Command Center. Zedd manages to wake up from his deep sleep, but even he knows that he can’t put up much of a fight and willingly gets taken by Promethea as well as the other members of his crew.
Back in space, Trini arrives with Yale backing her up in his Zord. The four MMPR Rangers combine their Zords into a new formation to fight off a giant-sized Alpha-1. They win the fight with Trini slicing off Alpha-1’s head. However, Alpha-1 has been upgraded by Mistress Vile’s magic and is still alive.
As the Stone Canyon Trio rescue Zack and [Insert Name Here] from Alpha-1’s goons, Trini gives the lowdown to Kim. Apparently, the planet they are on used to have a Masterforge which was destroyed thanks to the events of Power Rangers Universe. But, Trini hadn’t figured out what they wanted before Alpha-1 took over her Zord and grabbed the other Omega Rangers.
All of the Rangers then regroup on the Spectrum II, where it’s revealed that for some reason, the villains were after an ancient Morphin Grid navigator. Basically a compass that the original Morphin’ Masters used to change the coordinates of the Arch to go into a specific set of coordinates in the Morphin’ Grid.
But, as the Rangers all return to Earth in light of this, Alpha-1 repairs himself and readies his Super Putty army to attack again…
Ending Thoughts
I have to admit. This story went under the radar when it was released as no one really was talking about it. Honestly, after reading it, it’s understandable.
It’s an ok issue. Art is strong as it has ever been. It connects both Ranger teams back together for this big threat. For new readers jumping onto the story for MMPR #101, it introduces the Omega Rangers’ new dynamic with Kevor (that was the Insert Name Here) and teases a potential romance between Zack and Trini. It doesn’t do much to advance the overall mystery of Mistress Vile other than giving us the McGuffin item, but it’s enjoyable, nonetheless.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #105 is a good transitioning issue, returning a whole group of Rangers to us while we’re still wondering where our Green Ranger is.
Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid
- Yeah, I’ll be honest with you. I’m really not into the romances this time around. I’m just not.
- New Megazord formation is fine. I would be more interested in it if the Firebird Zord was more defined, I guess. But, honestly, unlike other Megazord formations like this, this is just a random combination. No real meaning or anything. That’s why this feels underwhelming.
- Sometime before the end of the year, I have to go back and look at my thoughts on Alpha-1 because he might seem just generic evil now.
