Preface
Kaiju Power vs Dino Power!
Let’s Go!
The Cover
A cool image of a cold-blooded beast standing over the conquered heroes. And Godzilla’s there too.
The Story
The fight rages on with the Megazord attacking Godzilla. While the Rangers do a decent job blocking Godzilla’s attacks, on the ground, Tommy is attacked by Goldar, who says that Rita has plans for him. Tommy is taken up to the UFO with his Morpher stripped away. As Rita tells him that she plans on putting Tommy back under her control, she sends the fleet of UFOs to attack both the Megazord and Godzilla. Both titans retreat from the battle, with Godzilla going back into the water and the Rangers separating back into their Zords and demorphing.
The morphin’ teens help some civilians get to safety, where they are informed that Godzilla is actually Earth’s protector, usually fighting off the Xilien soldiers. The Rangers quickly deduce that they messed up and hijack one of the crashed UFOs to go back to the mothership and find Tommy. They morph back into action and fight Goldar and the gang. The Xiliens decide to take advantage of the situation and send down another kaiju, Gigan, to attack survivors at the amusement park. Since Godzilla’s out of commission, the Rangers are forced to leave Tommy alone with Rita and reform the Megazord to stop Gigan’s rampage. However, Rita decides to turn the battle in her favor, sending down her own monsters, Eye Guy and Rhinoblaster.
Ending Thoughts
Man, in any universe, people in Angel Grove can just not catch a break, can they?
So, the MMPR team gets a little more presence in this story with the Rangers finding out Godzilla’s deal as well as Rita setting the story to go in an interesting direction. Placing classic monsters of the week here is brilliant. With the TMNT crossover, we got a lot of deep cuts with TMNT characters and world-building, but not much for MMPR. Here, just as the series features classic kaiju from Godzilla’s history, it also uses the opportunity to utilize nostalgia for the Power Ranger fans as well.
Art-wise, the quality is the same as the last issue with the fight sequences being top-tier. That final image of Godzilla vs the Megazord is such an amazing sight it personally tops anything the Dragonzord did in the last issue. The art also utilizes colors to great effect. The final page is a great example of this with the dark atmosphere contrasting with the bright colors of the various monsters assembled towering over our heroes.
Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #2 feels a little cheesier than the previous issue but absolutely makes up for it with the Megazord being challenged by more monsters than ever.
Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid
- So, just to recap, the fight with the Megazord vs. Godzilla resulted in a tie and the fight with the Dragonzord vs. Godzilla resulted in Godzilla winning. Seems like Dragonzord is now F-tier status.
- Gotta admit I don’t like Tommy’s character design. Looks like every generic movie protagonist.
- It puts things into perspective when “Space chicken with meat-hook hands” isn’t the weirdest monster the Power Rangers have faced.
- Wait, the T-Rex Zord can breathe fire? Since when?
- Having Rhinoblaster here means that in terms of the timeline, this takes place about two episodes before the end of Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2. It also means that Tommy’s powers are weakened so there’s justification for him being nerfed in this story. I mean, If I had a nickel for every time Tommy got nerfed in a crossover with cold-blooded animals, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s strange that it happened twice.
