“Abrakadanger” was a fun romp of a classic Power Rangers episode and a Preston focus which was welcome after a little while. In this episode, Preston got to explore more of his magical powers which although hilarity ensued allowed him to learn an important lesson. It also allowed Hayley to learn a lesson in the process and it was fun to see these two interact as well. Let’s take a look back at some of the little moments that I enjoyed the most!
Princess Viera’s Warning: Princess Viera made a very welcome return to the show tucked away inside of a care package for the Rangers. She left the Rangers with the Lion Fire Ninja Power Stars; also within the package was a special gift for Preston! She left him an ancient spell book and the Dragon Wand (which for some reason comes from the Lion Galaxy.)
She specifically advises him to learn each spell in the order in which they appear in the book, but of course in the background you can see that Preston is too preoccupied with the excitement on his new toys. Obviously, here we know that some interesting events are about to unfold.
Hayley’s Grudge: Early in the episode Victor decided to remind everyone that he had previously won a tennis match against Hayley and even proceeded to make fun of her with Monty via footage on a TV screen. This set off a deep grudge inside of Hayley and instead of allowing Victor to get the trophy again this year, by default (which he seems to want a lot), she offers herself up as his opponent once more. Good for her!
Later, she begins to practice as much as she can but gets interrupted by Preston’s magical shenanigans.
I really enjoyed the passion that we got to see in Hayley during this episode. While she did let the grudge with Victor get the best of her, to the point where she could have been expelled for the magical mishaps, she still held her own and wanted to prove that she was the proper athlete she knew she was to defeat Victor!
Preston’s Magic: At first Preston’s magic seemed to work out, but later he skipped ahead in the spells (even though the Princess specifically told him not to.) However, it was pretty fun to see Preston stumble over the spells and get the worst possible spell wrong, he turned Hayley invisible right before her big rematch against Victor!
Even more hilarity ensued when Hayley decides to put on a mask, garage clothes and Calvin’s hoodie to disguise herself and play the match anyways! I especially loved when Victor knocked Hayley’s mask off, appearing to knock her head off, and Preston appears out of no where to make it look like a trick! Random, but clever!
Abrakadanger: When I think about it, I have to say that Abrakadanger is my favorite monster in Ninja Steel. Design wise he looks so awesome! The original Sentai design is based off of a flying carpet! His staff is just too cool as it is basically a flying broom stick with a crescent moon surrounding a blue orb! I loved that his theme was magic to fit in with Preston’s mistakes with his own magical skills.
It was a little goofy, but still fun that Abrakadanger turned Brody, Sarah & Calvin into stuffed animals as one of his curses.
Mick’s Lesson: Later, wrapped in a nice little package, Mick decides to pull it all together for us. Preston isn’t able to master the Reversal Spell and can’t figure out why. But Mick suddenly drops a truth bomb and decides he wants to learn Tennis. Immediately, Preston thinks he’s crazy because to become a pro at Tennis you have to work really hard to be good at it.
ABRAKA-DUH!
Finally, Preston sees the error in his ways and decides that the best course of action is to do what Princess Viera said in her first sentence to him about the book….practice the spells in order. You have to work hard at something you want to be a master at! That was Preston’s lesson this episode and he had to learn it to become a Master at Magic, which apparently he did become in only a few episodes.
After an adorable montage of spell practicing (awkward spell language though….) his fellow Rangers were finally freed from Abrakadanger’s spell and his own mishap!
The Dragon Spell: During the battle with Abrakadanger, Preston and Brody teamed up to perform a Magic Dragon Super Slash! Epic effects are epic, just thought I’d share that with you 😀
The Megazord Battle: I didn’t mention this in my little snippet about Abrakadanger because I wanted to mention the fact that not only did he have a broom for a staff but he freaking flew it around as he got chased by the Megazord! Also, he was able to turn the Megazord in Dragon Mode to stone! Yeah, he’s totally my favorite monster!
Victor’s Loss: Most of what can be said about Victor and Monty this episode can already be read in my earlier segments as they involved Hayley more so. Victor, as per his usual self, was caught cheating during their first rematch and, just like he deserved, was totally handed his butt in the second rematch against Hayley and I was cheering the entire time. This may also be one of the fewer times when I enjoyed seeing him fly into something messy. Making fun of Hayley during the first few moments of the episode was a low blow, but I’m sure some of you out there will say to me “Well, you did advocate for them to be made fun of last week.”
True, I did. But they deserved it. 😛
Truly, like I said earlier, this episode was a fun time to watch, had an awesome monster and it was fun to spend more time with Preston. It had lots of goofy moments and again, like many of the Ninja Steel episodes, has a decent lesson for the smaller viewers at home. Which I do feel is important for this type of show that promotes friendship & teamwork!
Only two more episodes, and the Christmas Special, remain before this season is up! Let’s see what happens next!
