Preface
So, as stated in the previous issue, there are now monsters disguised as humans all over the world and they can appear at any moment. But, look on the bright side.
Billy still looks cute though.
The Cover
This cover shows literally nothing that happens in this issue, but it does successfully paint the comic as dark and mysterious. Just the imagery itself is breathtaking.
The Story
Kim’s dad takes her out to breakfast, where she tells her that he’s planning to propose to his girlfriend. Before Kim can talk about that further, Tommy is nearby and both their communicators go off. Trini and Billy are in the park jogging, talking about how Billy’s mom is super worried about him ever since the Lord Drakkon incident when they get the call.
Jason, Billy, and Zack go to Spain to fight the Goth Sloth, a monster with the ability to slow people down (like Slogre from Ninja Steel), while Tommy and the girls fight Crowverload, an electric-type monster, in Canada. The Rangers are having a tough time fighting both monsters until Zack teleports Goth Sloth right in front of Crowverload’s electric shock and Goth Sloth is destroyed in the process. All six Rangers then destroy Crowverload.
Hey, that’s my job, Zack!
Back at the Command Center, the Rangers question Finster about where his monsters are, but Finster says that he has no idea how many he made or where they are and that he has no way of controlling them. The Rangers ask Alpha if he can track them, but he has no idea when or where they could appear. Suddenly, a proximity alert goes off as Grace Sterling is walking up to the Command Center and is requesting to see Zordon. The Rangers go outside and ask her multiple questions starting off with how does she know where the Command Center is. The issue ends with Grace revealing that she was Zordon’s original Red Ranger.
“Red’s a girl? Right on!”
Ending Thoughts
MMPR #19 is good. I really don’t know what else to say.
Art’s great, action’s great. I found the family drama interesting (especially with Billy’s mom), the MOTWs here was creative enough that I could see them in the actual tv show (and the use of shadows to make them seem more menacing was brilliant), and the twist at the end caught me off guard.
The next issue is one of those “filler” issues that fills in some backstory so most likely, we will get some explanation on that ending revelation.
Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid
- There are threats all over the world and there’s no way to detect them until it’s too late? I have a feeling that this might be leading to some sort of political message here in the future…
- If I was a parent and my child was buried under rubble for four days, the moment we find him, I would not leave his side. I would handcuff myself to him. I would track him. I would be super paranoid about losing him again. What would you do?
- So, Kim’s dad brought the engagement ring to the restaurant? Seems like overkill.
- Coincidentally, the one dude in Spain that had a talking role can speak English.
- Art is good, but they barely put in any effort into the inside of the Command Center.
- “Most of Finster’s monsters are combinations…” Really? I mean I can name some, but I can also think of a lot other monsters that aren’t combos. *spends hours thinking about this one quote*
- Grace walked the whole hike to the Command Center when she’s like 40 or 50 years old. Girl’s fit.
- Also, she exactly knew where to look at the Viewing Globe for that one shot.
