Preface
It’s been a good chunk of months since the last issue came out. Does the comic hold up after a long hiatus? Time to find out.
The Cover
Uh, just a random rainbow with Supes, Green Lantern, Zack, and Trini coming from the sky?
Yeah, this just seemed kinda weird especially since Alpha is kind of the main focus in just this issue. It’s not even really that great artistically. It’s just random.
The Story
Coming from last time, Wonder Woman, Jason, Kim, and Tommy go to the NATO headquarters to warn them about Brainiac’s attack while Flash goes around the Earth, finding Zedd in the middle of the ocean creating monsters. Green Lantern is in space, fighting off Brainiac’s drones. And everyone else is on Brainiac’s ship, dealing with a Cyborg with two giant holes in his chest.
Cyborg isn’t dead (because of course, he isn’t), so Batman reboots Cyborg to free him from Brainiac’s control. All of the heroes onboard find Angel Grove among the other shrunken cities. They grab it and plan on running, but before that, Cyborg says that while he was connected to the ship, he realized that Zedd gave Brainiac Alpha to play with. (Why? *jazz hands* That’s why.) Alpha talks to Brainiac robot to robot and tells him off on why him bottling up a bunch of cities is stupid when you think about it.
The heroes rescue Alpha, cutting up Brainiac’s body into a million different pieces to do so. Billy grabs one of Brainiac’s arms and they all get on the Javelin to help the others on Earth protecting NATO. After the rest of the Rangers are given back their Power Coins and they morph, Billy says he has a plan on how to defeat Brainiac’s forces and the heroes fight to buy him and Cyborg some time.
Zedd is about to make one of his monsters grow, but Flash grabs one of Zedd’s growth bombs and hands it to Alpha for safekeeping. Brainiac, using one of his drones, tries to take it from Alpha, but instead…
Ending Thoughts
Probably one of the best issues for this series and definitely one of my favorite issues out of all of the PR comics from Boom!
I will admit, that even though the action in this issue was great, it was more from the Justice League side rather than the Rangers. We didn’t get to see much of Kim, Tommy, and Jason using the DC weapons and the other Rangers’ action scenes were really short. It felt a little disjointed because of that. However, it’s now my new favorite issue just because of Alpha’s character focus.
Alpha 5 is a character who doesn’t get much focus in the comics. He got a couple of moments from the TV show, but never something like this where he has the focus (unless you count the time he kidnapped children during Christmas). Here, not only are his interactions with Brainiac the best written scenes in the whole series, but every time he talks to a character, it just becomes a funny and memorable moment. I’ll talk about this more when the final issue comes out, but I honestly wish that Alpha was the main focus of this crossover rather than Zack.
No matter how the series ends, I can honestly say that this issue is something that definitely should be picked up on its own.
Random Thoughts from the Morphin’ Grid
- Zedd’s monsters were pretty generic, if I’m being honest. I would have loved to see some monsters from the show in the mix.
- The scene with Wonder Woman talking to the delegates is just aggravating to me. For starters, shouldn’t security have stopped her before she walked into this meeting? Who in the world would fire a gun inside of a room with dozens of people inside? And, if the Rangers were apparently right outside for Wonder Woman to basically say “Come in”, why didn’t any security outside notice this and try to stop it? Especially Tommy, who literally is dressed like a supervillain. Also, this whole scene is pretty pointless since the Rangers and the League are basically beating up Zedd and Brainiac on their own.
- Green Lantern. Can create anything. Makes a spiky bat that’s only hand sized.
- Oh no, Batman knows how to reboot Cyborg. What a terrible thing he has done. *sarcasm*
- Batman: “We took on Brainiac to save a robot?” It wouldn’t be a Power Rangers related comic without robot racism.
- Kim stole Hawkeye’s thunder from “Age of Ultron” there for a minute.
- I never knew Cyborg can create a firewall… by shooting his arm cannon.
