“Deep Down Under” was a powerful Female-centric episode and I loved it! Shelby took center stage during this episode and continued her tradition of being a vast improvement in Pink Rangers. Kendall showed us her true brain-power, deduction and reasoning powers by even simply leading the Rangers from the lab! As always the moral of the story was overtly subtle and brought redemption to a side character. Let’s take a look back at some of the moment’s I loved!
Dr. Runga: Runga’s character was a roller coaster of emotions for me, Haha! First, I was intrigued by Shelby’s fangasming when he was mentioned. It was another of Shelby’s interest in archaeology we hadn’t seen in a few episodes. I was even more interested when he told the legend of the Taniwha, connecting it to the Plesio Zord, and showed the Rangers his tattoo! However, as will be explained more as we go on, his character turned several times from a senpai, to a villain and eventually to redemption.
Plesio Zord Spotted: The original footage of the Plesio Zord, all of it throughout the episode, was fabulous. Plesio was my favorite Zord from the source material and just like in previous seasons, seeing it in Power Rangers made it just that much better! I was also happy that the Zord was referred to as a “She”
Fury’s Influence: The scene between Dr. Runga and Fury was very interesting as Fury attempted, and succeeded for a moment, to sway the Doctor to the dark side! This conversation was rather wicked and proved that Fury is relentless in attempting to gain Sledge’s favor.
Fury was a little more ruthless this episode and its showed how his character is developing and changing since his split from Ivan. A Welcome change in insanity.
Shelby Confrontation: Camille Hyde has given us some amazing Shelby moments so far this season but when she confronts Dr. Runga and basically tells him off for selling out, was perfect! Her words, the emotion and basically the sass were what we were all thinking!
Redemption: As I said above, Dr. Runga went through several changes during this episode making his character rather unlikable. I honestly would’ve rather seen him carry out his deeds instead of having a redemption scene with Shelby. However, I do suppose it was important for Shelby to sway the man she looked up to. It just seemed rather unrealistic to me. Never trust a man in a purple scarf.
Shelby In The Lead: My favorite moments from this episode include how many times Shelby and then the Pink Ranger took the lead in not only morphing but had some bad ass morphed and unmorphed fight scenes. But, it also has to be said that ALL of the unmorphed fight footage in this episode was fabulous!
Plesio Charge Megazord: Again, in the Sentai this mecha was my favorite because let’s be real; It’s a Dinosaur, a Spaceship and is freakin’ purple. I mean it doesn’t get much cooler than that! The footage used here is beautiful and it’s nice to welcome back mid-space Zord battles! I can’t wait to get the US Version of the toy!
Final Thoughts
Shelby definitely shined in this episode that was yet another awesome and cool entry into the Dino Charge library. Again, Dino Charge continue to dominate with an extreme balance between Character Development, UnMorphed fights, New Zords & Enjoyable and Intimidating Villains!
The other Rangers, while mere background characters in this episode still had their tiny moments from Koda’s distates for shoes to the side eye that we all saw Chase and Riley giving each other! Basically, another cool & awesome episode as we begin to wind down Dino Charge and prepare to go Super!
