Another fabulous episode from Power Rangers Dino Charge and this time we all got what we wanted, More Chase focus!
What I loved most about this episode was that we got a tiny look into how Chase got his Energem, including a link back to his homeland.
“Breaking Black” had everything you could want in a Power Rangers episode! Character Development for a previously shadowy character, a New Dino Spike to play with, Another New Megazord combination AND let’s not forget that infamous allusion to the future at the end!
Moana: What a crazy but lovable character to introduce! Her facial expressions and voice were adorable and made all the more lovable as she spoke to Chase. She had a cat inside of a carriage! The most adorable little kitty we’ve ever seen!
But, she really g ave of the vibe of the eccentric shop owner and it was clear that she had great affection for Chase.
Chase VS Spellbinder: All of the effects during this scene are fantastic and the writers made an excellent use of the Sentai footage which put KyoryuBlack in a much different situation. Plus why does Spellbinder keep saying “Relax” ? What is he Frankie?
Chase & Tyler: While it was made evident in previous episode that there are tiny clashes between Tyler and Chase, we got to see another small bit of that as well this episode. Yes, Chase is technically under a spell but Chase’s actions and mannerisms still ring true especially during Tyler’s captivity and afterwards when Chase slipped his hand away. I’m not sure if this is going somewhere, but I do enjoy the subtle rivalry and defiance amongst the Red Ranger and another.
Chase & The Keeper: Another scene I really enjoyed was during the scenes in the Base where Keeper attempts to figure out what is wrong with Chase. In these mere moments Keeper has demonstrated himself a better mentor than Gosei, IMO. Where he not only attempts to help figure out a situation but gives the Ranger advice and sage-like words as well.
Kendall: Kendall’s scenes are getting better and better when she introduces the Rangers to new technology she has created! That’s why she’s there, right? I did happen to notice a slight purple light shining on her as she explained the Dino Spike Charger; or I’m just seeing things!
The Black Energem: In order to prove that Chase does have the power to overcome the spell, Moana tells the story of how Chase came to meet her. Chase, very luckily with the power of his awesome skateboard, saved Moana’s baby cat…..As a reward Moana offered Chase the Black Energem!
Shelby’s Plan: I do find it interesting and rather adorable that Chase’s skateboard was the item to unlock Spellbinder’s spell! Or in this case it was just a dolly. So apparently, Chase only needs to be on wheels to break spells. Fun! lol.
Evil Eyes: I just wanted to point out how cool this is!
Curio at Battle: The battle between Spellbinder, Wrench and Curio was pretty awesome to watch especially watching Shelby have a little fun as she fights him! I didnt even mind the talking thsi time! But he was right, he probably should’ve stayed with Poisandra, HAHA
Dino Spike: This sequence was fabulous to watch just for the pretty Sentai footage but I definitely love the funcion of the Dino Spike especially since it’s hurled at the monster!
The Para-Zord: I know this has been done to death during Kyoryger, but LOOK the Para-Zord comes from Hogwarts!
Para-Raptor Formation: I Love Love Love how this sequence is shot as the sun sets! I can’t ever get over how beautiful Megazord battles look like when they take place at night, dusk or dawn!
The Pendent: I was so intruged, and surprised they added this, by this little hint at something to come.
What could be inside the pendent that is so evil? and from New Zealand…?
ALL WILL BE REVEALED IN TIME!
Final Thoughts
I feel like such a lame-o every time I give a Dino Charge episode a perfect score but to be honest not much about this series bothers me. With Super Megaforce, I was bothered every ten seconds and it created a large article of bitching. I am so happy that we are no longer in that world. Each week is a treat of both Power Rangers goodness as well as a continuation of a great story with a great cast.
What I wanted to point out most about this episode was that Chase was by far the star of this episode and showed an epic emotional range! Chase, played by James Davies, not only demonstrated Happiness, Goofiness, Joking, Anger, Sadness, Desperation, Villainy and Victory all in one episode! Including several more! Not only is James a great actor but he has made Chase a great character as well.
But, one thing I love about Dino Charge is that the episode can be focused on one Ranger but the others are still allowed to shine in small ways. Tyler had his goofy excited moments, Shelby got to be part of two plans and fought Curio, Koda was adorable as usual and Riley was a supportive yet true friend to Chase. WOW. All that in one episode.
Let’s not forget the Villains and Mentors shined this episode as well. Keeper knocked Gosei off the wall, Kendall made a new Charger activating the Dino Spike AND we had that strange focus on the pendent at the end! That is why this episode deserves a 10!
